The Toshie Mackintosh Collection

The Toshie collection is designed by a group of Glasgow School of Art graduates - who are now practicing designers in Scotland.

During our studies at the GSA we lived with the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, his interior design and decoration. The tile motifs decorating the corridors and stairwells which led to the studios were imprinted on our minds as we hurried to our classes on different levels of the School.

Over the years there was a real frustration among us that no one had produced a stylish and elegant interpretation based on CRM’s work, that could be evolved into a contemporary design. We set out to produce a few signature pieces to establish our core brand in the belief that the discerning purchaser would appreciate being able to, at last, buy something evocative of Mackintosh. We hoped that our pieces would bring a new dimension to his work in both design and manufactured product.
After much heart searching, trial and error, we created our ‘Toshie’ Collection, where we echo the colour palette used in his interior and furniture designs and of course, the tile motifs that left such an impression with us.

The collection, centred around our Toshie nine square brand, is produced in two signature fabric designs; our ‘Mackintosh Tartan’ and ‘Mackintosh Check’. The designs are woven in pure wool, fine merino and cashmere, by Johnston’s of Elgin, printed on pure silks at the Glasgow School of Art and the hides we use are Scottish wild deer skins. All of our wool and cashmere scarves are woven in Scotland and our silk and accessories ranges are handcrafted by artisans, also in Scotland.

In most countries you can buy classic pieces based on distinguished designs from the country’s artists, architects and designers - we thought it was time to do the same for Mackintosh in Scotland.
